With Wendy now gone, Walker assembled his team back in the Incident Room and stood at the front, ready to speak.

‘Okay, everyone. We may have a couple of possible theories on what may have happened here; but note, they’re just theories at present. We have no solid evidence to support these ideas as yet,’ said Walker. ‘First, it seems Wendy Robinson disliked her mother-in-law to the point where she wished her dead, and she hated living in the same house as her. And we also have an ex-partner in Robert Harris, who has been witnessed as stating he knows people who can get rid of people for a fee. Now, putting two and two together, we might be coming up with five, but we have to investigate further anyway. There’s a possibility that someone has been paid to kill Patricia Robinson, but that doesn’t explain the first murder—and both cases had the same signature and M.O., so that doesn’t quite fit yet. It’s possible the killer was out looking for Patricia though, as both bodies were found in the same general area, and Tom Woods just pissed the killer off somehow, was at the wrong time at the wrong place, and became an unplanned target. Then the killer tried to throw us off by making it look like a serial killing rather than a contract one? I don’t know about that. But it’s certainly a line of inquiry worth following.

‘And what’s the other idea?’ asked DI Riley.

‘The second theory is that Harris is drug dealing, and he’s been using those woods, dressed in a hoodie perhaps, as per our sighting, to conduct some deals. We already know he’s a dealer who brags about knowing contract killers, so whether that part’s true or not, he’s certainly an unsavoury character at best. Maybe Tom Woods stumbled into one such deal going on in there, or perhaps he was a part of a deal himself, and things went awry, got violent, and he was killed by either Harris or one of his criminal contacts. And if Patricia had seen Harris, or one of his associates she’d seen him with in the past, in that area, and there was a possibility of her tying them to the Woods murder, this would be reason to kill her too. Maybe Wendy is involved in these criminal dealings too, somehow, since they can’t even afford a place of their own. So, we have to consider that as well.’

‘Romantically separated, but criminally involved,’ said DI Riley.

‘Exactly,’ said Walker.

‘It certainly seems more plausible than the first idea,’ said DI Riley, who’d quickly emerged as one of the more vocal members of the group.

‘Agreed. It’s not quite as exciting as the idea of hiring a hitman, but these things rarely are. They’re usually mundane. I can’t really see a pro using a signature like this, even to try and throw us off. This seems to fit more with a spontaneous non-professional killing, something done in a fit of rage in the first instance and then again to cover up the first murder.
